Your dentist’s 4 tips on how to care for your dental implants in Watford

Having dental implants is a great way to replace missing teeth. However, in order to be able to enjoy a long-lasting smile, it is important you mind their hygiene. Caring for your natural teeth is nothing different than caring for your dental implants, so thorough oral hygiene is paramount in order to prevent diseases.

Here are 4 tips about how you can effectively clean your dental implants and maintain a good oral health.

Toothbrush

Your brushing technique might need a bit of a freshen up, especially when you want to reach the inner side of the teeth, alongside other areas. Many patients prefer to use an electric toothbrush, which is also a good alternative. Note: If you have a bridge, it is important you clean under it, every time you brush your teeth.

End Tufted Brush

An Interspace brush, or end tufted brush, is a perfect choice if you want to clean the hard-to-reach areas on the inner side of your teeth, meaning the areas around the tooth that supports your implant. It is also an excellent means to clean the outer side of your implants, as well.

Interdental Brush

With an interdental brush, you can quickly clean the abutment posts, crown, and the sides of the teeth that support your implants. When using the brush, it is best if you have one with a back and forth stroke. In order to effectively clean your implants with it, press it gently against the abutment posts or the sides of the tooth that support your implant(s).Note: It is important you use the right size of an interdental brush. If you use one that is too small, you won’t get the cleaning effect you want, to keep your implants healthy. An interdental brush too big, on the other hand, will cause discomfort when you brush your implants. Ideally, you could choose a plastic-coated wire brush. However, your dentist or hygienist will be the ones that will recommend the perfect brush size for you.

Floss

There are areas that the interdental brush cannot reach easily. For those narrow areas, flossing is the best way to clean your implants. Pass floss, preferably super floss or thick floss, back and forth between the teeth neighbouring your implant and the implant tooth itself, in order to clean the abutment posts and the side of the tooth that supports your implant. Alternatively, you can pass the floss through the spaces right next to the abutment posts.

With proper home care of your implant(s) and getting professional maintenance on a regular basis as well, you will keep your implants for life and ensure long-term success.
